Discovering the South End of Bainbridge Island
Where is the best place to live on Bainbridge Island? Well, that’s a great question and if you ask 5 people, you will likely get 5 different answers. Each neighborhood on Bainbridge Island is distinct and has its own vibe. Allow me to share my thoughts on the different neighborhoods and what each of them has to offer. Let’s start on the sunny South End of the Island and work our way North.
Bainbridge Island’s south end was once a bustling hub, with economic centers at Lynnwood Center, Port Blakely, and Fort Ward. Now, the peaceful avenues, sheltered coves, and local watering holes are all ideal places for a vacation or to live permanently. Accessed solely by back roads, once you get to the south end you never really want to leave, or have to. The south end is popular for many reasons, and the warm southern exposure is just one of them. The Lynnwood Centre is the hub of the south end of the Island and is home to a theatre, a bakery, burger joint, pizza parlor, ice cream shop, and a small store. Lynnwood Centre has grown a lot over the last several years and is now a destination for other island folks, as well as people visiting for a long weekend.
The neighboring Fort Ward area was once a military base and now offers newer construction homes. These homes are located next to Fort Ward park, which is an expansive park with hundreds of miles of protected trails, beautiful forests and shoreline walking paths. South Beach is a small stretch of coveted homes that sit along the south shoreline of the Island. A close knit community, where there are more walkers than cars, and breathtaking views that never get old. Crystal Springs area homes have western exposure and views of Rich Passage while waterfront homes on Rockaway Beach or Country Club Road have the coveted eastern exposure and Seattle Space Needle view. The common denominators of these different neighborhoods many homes enjoy water views, great beaches, hiking trails galore, good restaurants, and all day sunshine!
